An excerpt from Classroom Confidence- When students know their teacher cares about them as people, they’re more willing to follow rules and expectations—not out of fear, but out of respect. Discipline becomes less about enforcing authority and more about guiding students to make better choices.
I start each class by standing in the door and greeting each student by name as they enter my room. This helps to build rapport and trust with my students. I know their names and I can tell what mood a student is in and who is having a not so good day. I ask questions or make comments such as, “How did the track team do in the meet yesterday?” or “How are play rehearsals going?” or “Glad to have you back today, I missed you in the last class. How are you feeling today?” or “I like your haircut, looking sharp”. When students know that I care about them, then we build mutual trust and respect. When I do have to correct a student, it is much easier for me as a teacher for the students knows that I care and I am not just “picking” on them.
