Starting Strong: Defining Your Teaching Purpose and Mindset

Write Your Teaching Philosophy in 7 Steps

  1. Name your “why.”
In one sentence, state why you teach (e.g., “I teach to help students see themselves as capable thinkers and citizens.”).
  2. Define how learning happens.
In 2–3 bullets, describe what effective learning looks like in your room (collaboration, inquiry, timely feedback, practice with reflection).
  3. Clarify the teacher’s role.
Write 2–3 lines on how you see yourself (facilitator, coach, content expert, relationship-builder) and what that means day to day.
  4. Center relationships and belonging.
List 2 concrete ways you build trust and inclusion (name-knowledge routines, restorative conversations, multiple ways to participate).
  5. Connect beliefs to routines.
Choose 3 routines (opening minutes, transitions, formative checks) and state how each enacts your beliefs (“Because I value student voice, I start with a 90-second quick-write.”).
  6. Address assessment and growth.
In 2–3 lines, explain how you use assessment to guide instruction and student self-reflection (clear criteria, do-overs, conferencing).
  7. Commit to equity and professionalism.
Add a final sentence on accessibility, high expectations, and continuous improvement (PD, feedback loops, family partnerships).
